When did you start Dogfish Head Brewery, and what was your inspiration?
We opened Dogfish Head in 1995. At that time, we were the smallest commercial brewery in the country. We wanted to make beers that weren’t referencing commercially dominant styles and beers that incorporate exotic ingredients from around the globe. Or as we call it: Off-centered ales for off-centered people.

What effect has being the host of Brew Masters on Discovery Channel had on the brewery and/or the Dogfish Head brand?
We’ve been very fortunate that demand for our off-centered ales has been beyond our ability to make them for the last eight years. So the show hasn’t helped us sell more beer but it has helped spread the word about Dogfish and about the craft brewing renaissance happening around the globe right now. We’ve had a blast doing the Brew Masters show, and I am most proud of the moments in it that celebrate how talented and passionate all of my co-workers are as they do their jobs. Also, the show does a great job of demystifying the brewing process and makes it approachable for people just getting into all of the amazing and diverse beers that are being made by small indie breweries now.

What can readers expect to get out of this new updated and revised edition of Brewing Up a Business?
There’s still great stuff on what we learned at Dogfish as we started our business, but there is now more content devoted to ideas we’ve incorporated to grow our business. With chapters on utilizing social media (my wife Mariah is the queen of this at Dogfish) and differentiating your product or service in a crowded marketplace.

What’s in store for the future of Dogfish Head?
Lots of new and exotic beers, for sure. There will also be a Brew Masters episode centered around a brewpub we are working on that will be on a rooftop in New York City called Eataly. The restaurant will be run by Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich and Dogfish. Birra Del Borgo (Rome) and La Baladin (Turin) are the contributing breweries to the project. We’ve expanded our brewery and our website. We plan to build a bigger distillery and open another pub in 2012. Mostly, we just want to keep putting the where in Delaware and the mental in experimental.

health and Safety: Noise Hazards in the Workplace

Elimination of noise is the most efficient way to preclude risks to workers and should be thought about when new tool is purchased or procured for workplaces. Low noise tool should be premium when possible. A task employer or the equivalent person is responsible for demonstrating that tool noise levels have been thought about as part of the option process. The operate of noise generation/exposure should be thought about at every stage of a task and recorded with suitable controls. Site management should monitor activities and determine when noise assessments are required. As a rule of thumb if 2 habitancy stood 2m apart have to raise their voices to be heard then a potential noise question exists and an estimate should be made (all machinery emitting over 85dB (A) should be thought about to be a noise risk).

Occupational noise assessments should be undertaken by a competent person using a calibrated noise meter and should consist of an octave band analysis. Personnel should be given a option of suitable hearing protection so they can go for the most comfortable solution. Training should be given in its use, storehouse and maintenance. At the Lower Exposure activity Value of 80dB suitable ear protection should be made available. All individuals should be informed of the noise risk. At the Upper Exposure activity Value 85 dB suitable ear protection should be provided and should be worn in the Ear protection Zones. Ear protection zones should be clearly marked with the standard blue and white ear protection logo signs.

Health lookout should be undertaken where workers are commonly exposed above the Upper Exposure activity Values (85 dB and 137 dB peak noise) or when workers are occasionally exposed above the Upper Exposure activity Value, especially if individuals are particularly sensitive to noise, have a house history of the hazard or have former exposures. All personnel should receive data and training to help them understand and deal with the noise connected risks. This should include, but not be little to the risks faced (as well as the measures taken to eliminate or sacrifice them), the results of the risk estimate with noise measurements and noise operate and hearing protection measures, including restricted areas and Ppe.

Documentation relating to the noise hazards should be retained at a work site. In larger companies, upon completion of the task all data should be archived at the company's head office including noise risk assessments, induction and briefing records, Ppe issue records, health lookout records and noise monitoring/measurements.

Natalie Canavor and Claire Meirowitz take on the complex world of Information Age business writing, and break it down into 52 manageable, readable chunks of theory and practice. They address both modern options (email, blogs and web writing and the ubiquitous challenges of PowerPoint) and "legacy" modes.

You've heard much of this before, and they don't break what I would consider any significant new ground. But their message bears listening to again:
Consider your audience. Re-write. Edit mercilessly. Be direct. Be concise. Have a plan. Their packaging is relatively painless for content that many people may want to run and hide from. While dividing the content into 52 sections may suggest chewing in weekly bites...don't wait. You can't get what you want if you can't communicate effectively and this book will go a long way toward showing you what you need to make your case.

Overdiagnosed: Making People Sick in the Pursuit of Health Overview

After the criteria used to define osteoporosis were altered, seven million American women were turned into patients—literally overnight. The proliferation of fetal monitoring in the 1970s was associated with a 66 percent increase in the number of women told they needed emergency C-sections, but it did not affect how often babies needed intensive care—or the frequency of infant death. The introduction of prostate cancer screening resulted in over a million additional American men being told they have prostate cancer, and while studies disagree on the question of whether a few have been helped—there’s no disagreement that most have been treated for a disease that was never going to bother them. As a society consumed by technological advances and scientific breakthroughs, we have narrowed the definition of normal and increasingly are turning more and more people into patients. Diagnoses of a great many conditions, including high blood pressure, osteoporosis, diabetes, and even cancer, have skyrocketed over the last few decades, while the number of deaths from those diseases has been largely unaffected.
 
Drawing on twenty-five years of medical practice and research, Dr. H. Gilbert Welch and his colleagues, Dr. Lisa M. Schwartz and Dr. Steven Woloshin, have studied the effects of screenings and presumed preventative measures for disease and “pre-disease.” Welch argues that while many Americans believe that more diagnosis is always better, the medical, social, and economic ramifications of unnecessary diagnoses are in fact seriously detrimental. Unnecessary surgeries, medication side effects, debilitating anxiety, and the overwhelming price tag on health care are only a few of the potential harms of overdiagnosis.
 
Through the stories of his patients and colleagues, and drawing from popular media, Dr. Welch illustrates how overdiagnosis occurs and the pitfalls of routine tests in healthy individuals. We are introduced to patients such as Michael, who had a slight pain in his back. Despite soon feeling fine, a questionable abnormal chest X-ray led to a sophisticated scan that detected a tiny clot in his lung. Because it could not be explained, his doctors suggested that it could be a sign of cancer. Michael did not have cancer, but he now sees a psychiatrist to deal with his anxiety about cancer.
 
According to Dr. Welch, a complex web of factors has created the phenomenon of overdiagnosis: the popular media promotes fear of disease and perpetuates the myth that early, aggressive treatment is always best; in an attempt to avoid lawsuits, doctors have begun to leave no test undone, no abnormality—no matter how incidental—overlooked; and, inevitably, profits are being made from screenings, a wide array of medical procedures, and, of course, pharmaceuticals. Examining the social, medical, and economic ramifications of a health care system that unnecessarily diagnoses and treats patients, Welch makes a reasoned call for change that would save us from countless unneeded surgeries, debilitating anxiety, and exorbitant costs.
